I assume that the
commented date
refers to the time of publication, whereas the
received date
refers to the time of receipt by your server. This is a subtle difference that will certainly go unnoticed if neither server experiences downtime.

's answer is the correct one. You probably won't see much of a difference with posts that have comments, because we change the commented date when the comment is received. So it may look like it does nothing. However - if I create a top-level post and it gets stuck in the delivery queue (or in somebody's
moderation queue
) for a couple of days, there's a chance you'll never see it unless you sort by received date.
